OBLIG’s journey began with a Google search. After discovering that his name returned zero results, OBLIG took this as a sign to begin his very own chapter on the Internet.

Urban music aficionado and both a purveyor and pursuant of a hyper-specific movement in the scene; where the beauty of drill instrumentals come together with the trailblazing components of grime, OBLIG’s practice actively bridges the gap between the two genres, putting drill directly alongside grime and subsequently into new ears and bigger conversations.

Having immersed himself in drill from close to its conception when living in the USA, OBLIG boasts an encyclopaedic knowledge of the scene, with a particular focus on the producers. He fuses rave culture and drill in two key arenas; first, on his weekly Rinse show (which he describes as his “therapy”), boasting an all-star line up of guest DJs, producers and emcees past and present, but also in his live sets which see OBLIG curate an array of eclectic classics with brand new, exclusive dubplates.

With longer term label plans in the works (look out for OBLIGATED Records), OBLIG intends to fortify his position as an integral player in the evolution of the sound. For OBLIG it is all about legacy. He explains…

“You can’t watch a hip hop documentary without hearing certain names being mentioned. I want to be in future documentaries about drill and grime.”
